fostering student research through scientific inquiry and online mentorship

Welcome to the College Collaboration Web Site.
Inter-collegiate peer-to-peer mentoring between student teams is the focus of activity on this site.

Welcome students from Nassau Community College, University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, Emporia State University, and George Mason University in the United Arab Emirates!

The Spring session will run from February through March 2009. We invite you to join the fun of mentored plant investigations. - How to Participate

What it's all about...

PlantingScience is a learning and research resource, bringing together students, plant scientists, and teachers from across the nation. Students engage in hands-on plant investigations, working with peers and scientist mentors to build collaborations and to improve their understanding of science. - Learn more

Helping Us Grow

Behind every good project, there are great supporters. If your organization seeks to improve science literacy as a means of growing a sustainable tomorrow, we ask that you consider becoming a PlantingScience corporate supporter.

Garlic mustard plants have previously been shown to inhibit fungus growth. Because garlic mustard is an invasive species, we are interested in finding out different factors which can contribute to its success in foreign areas. Knowing that adult plants can inhibit fungus growth opens the door to the possibility that garlic mustard is antibacterial as well. The initial success of seeds in the environment is an important factor in the species potential to reproduce in a new area. With this, our objective is to test the antibiotic effectiveness of garlic mustard seed relative to two synthetic antibiotics. We will be submitting the seeds to different forms of agitation and concentration to further conclude the antibiotic properties.
